It's alright

I get the feeling there are a lot of people who'd like to read something like this.

After a lot of delay and 「まだ決まってない」 on the part of Softbank sales staff, I was finally able to order and receive this phone. I would have much rather gotten that sleek aluminum HTC or the Xperia. Best scenario would be if SB started carrying the Motorola phones.

Anyway, here are my thoughts:

Good points: The camera has a nice wide lens and takes good pictures and the front-facing camera does a better job than my macbook's webcam. Audio was alright as well. Screen is what you'd expect from a television manufacturer. The touch interface is a huge upgrade in performance from, say, an iPhone 4. サクサク. There is a bit of stupid re-drawing that happens when you zoom and scroll all over webpages but that's more an android thing than a Sharp thing.

1. The battery is fine, but built-in battery management is horrible. If you do not toggle cellular data and wireless data on/off when you need them, your battery is going to die very quickly. Unfortunately the built-in toggles do not have a cellular data switch so you will have to download Power Toggles free from the Google Play store. If you want to rely on the phone to manage its own network/data usage right out of the box then you will not be very happy. Those accustomed to the iPhone have been spoiled by Apple's power management.

2. Softbank deleted Android's stock SMS/MMS application and replaced it with a horrible 1990s-style inbox that looks just like a ケイタイ. There is no threaded conversation or unified messaging. It's functional but truly disappointing. If you download an alternative SMS/MMS app from the Play store be prepared to do some fiddling around to configure it properly. This is one of the last things I have to customize.

3. The up/down volume buttons and the sleep/wake button are awful. If you have been using an iPhone then you have been taking good button design and placement for granted. Also the volume does not get quite loud enough for in-car speakerphone.

4. The stock launchers are unsightly to say the least. Download Apex, Nova, or something else so you can have a real android experience.

5. The rest of the stock software is pretty much useless and should be disabled or uninstalled as soon as possible to speed operation and prevent battery drain. This includes replacing the lock screen.

6. The phone comes with a wonderful charging stand but does not re-orient itself to landscape mode when inserted. Also, if you buy one of those overpriced cases from Softbank you will be disappointed to learn that you'll have to remove the case prior to using the dock.

7. I have yet to return to the Softbank store to figure out what awful change to my billing plan I need to make in order to 'subscribe to the tethering service'. With insurance we're already at ~8,500円/月.

8. If your life is anything less than 90% あかさたな then you are definitely not going to like the built-in contact manager. I recommend Contacts+ as you can customize it to only show relevant telephone contacts.

9. If you are charging this phone and using it at the same time it is not going to charge very fast if at all. If you use a cheap USB cable it might even /discharge/. I was horrified. If you plan on using Google Navigation just expect the charging to /sustain/ the battery level rather than replenish it. The story is similar for internet video chatting.

10. English translations of Softbank/Sharp software are mediocre at best, but then again you shouldn't be using that stuff anyway.

11. You might have to reboot it every once and a while if it starts acting funny, clear the app caches periodically, use a task manager to kill off free-wheeling programs, evaluate battery performance, etc.

12. If your interface language is set to English but you want to switch to Japanese input mode, it will always give you the ABC 12-key first and you will have to cycle though that and the numbers in order to finally get to the Japanese input. As far as I can tell there is no option to change that. Once you install a better input method like Simeji or ATOK you will be a bit disappointed to find that you cannot remove Sharp's stock Japanese input method from the keyboard switcher menu.


tl:dr This is a pretty good piece of hardware with awful buttons and un-surprisingly atrocious software. If you don't want to take the time to customize this phone then do not expect it to function properly. Let's see if it can last the next 25ヶ月.
